Lip Balm
Beeswax and coconut oil create a powerful blend for a lip balm. I first developed this recipe in my early twenties after noticing my mother-in-law’s struggles with thin skin, pressure sore blemishes, and cracked lips. Although I can’t pinpoint the exact origin of the recipe, I decided to create a small batch and gifted it to her along with beeswax candles, mead, soap, and biscuits for Christmas. This marked the beginning of my tradition of curating “make everything” gift baskets for extended family members. Keeping the concoction simple, I chose to omit essential oils, as I was enchanted by the natural scent of beeswax. When I informed her that the balm was specifically for her lips, she eagerly embraced it. Weeks later, during a visit, she joyfully shared that her lips had stopped cracking, and she had even begun applying it to her arm sores, which were showing signs of improvement.
Impressed by the results, she requested a larger batch. That very evening, I crafted her a 500ml jar. After her sores healed, she rarely needed to reapply the balm. Nonetheless, I always made sure she had some on hand, just in case.
Ingredients:
- 100 grams coconut oil
- 50 grams beeswax
- A few drops of vitamin E oil (the amount can vary depending on your preference, but typically around 5-10 drops per 100 grams of total ingredients)
- Essential oils for fragrance (optional, choose one or a combination):
- Lavender essential oil
- Peppermint essential oil
- Tea tree essential oil
- Eucalyptus essential oil
- Lemon essential oil
Instructions:
- Measure out 100 grams of coconut oil and 50 grams of beeswax.
- In a double boiler or a heat-safe bowl placed over a pot of simmering water, melt the coconut oil and beeswax together. Stir occasionally to ensure even melting.
- Once fully melted, remove the mixture from heat and allow it to cool slightly.
- Add a few drops of vitamin E oil to the melted mixture. Vitamin E oil acts as a natural preservative and provides additional nourishment for the skin.
- Choose one essential oil or create your own blend by combining different oils. Here are a few suggestions:
- Lavender and peppermint for a calming and refreshing scent
- Tea tree and eucalyptus for a cleansing and invigorating aroma
- Lemon for a bright and uplifting fragrance
- Add the selected essential oil(s) to the melted mixture. Start with about 10-20 drops total for a subtle fragrance, adjusting to your preference.
- Stir well to evenly distribute the essential oils throughout the mixture.
- Carefully pour the mixture into clean, dry containers of your choice, such as small jars, tins, or lip balm tubes.
- Let the mixture cool and solidify at room temperature. This may take a few hours, depending on the size of your containers and the ambient temperature.
- Once solidified, your homemade beeswax and coconut oil mixture with essential oils is ready to use!
