House Build Part 6

House build part 6. If you would like to read previous house build updates head here.

Friday 16th August

As week 1 of bricklaying wrapped up, we were amazed by how many bricks the two blokes had laid. Their progress was impressive, and seeing the electrical and plumbing being set up for the drywall installation made us even more excited about the build moving forward.

Friday 23rd August

We couldn’t visit the property until Friday, the 23rd, due to work commitments. During our visit, we met the new site supervisor. During this time Lanky raised some concerns with the build so far.

Concerns we raised:

  • Rubbish, we find ourselves picking up trash the workers leave around.
  • The slab near the kitchen windows appears too short, causing part of the house to extend off the slab. We were assured that they would fill in this gap with new cement.
  • In the garage, a section of the ceiling frame seemed lower than other areas. Lanky worried this might affect the ceiling. The supervisor reassured us that the lower section is for mounting the garage door unit.
  • The gutters still aren’t connected to the stormwater system and currently drain onto the ground. After recent rains, this has caused some damage to the hill built around the house.
  • The power points in the walk-in wardrobe are supposed to be about 4 feet off the floor, but the electrician installed them at floor level. The supervisor will inform the electrician and get it changed.
  • I noticed one of the fixed glass panes above the sliding door was missing. It hadn’t been missing the previous week, and no damage was noted in the logs. We suspect a worker broke it and didn’t report it. The supervisor assured us it would be replaced.
  • We’ve been waiting for a couple of weeks for the previous site supervisor to inform the fireplace installation team when they can install the fireplace. The current supervisor is following up on this.

Besides raising our concerns and meeting the new supervisor we also got to have a good look at all the work they have done so far, and we were super surprised at how much work had been completed over the week.

Update.

the brickwork has advanced so much and we were told they expected to have it finished by around the 28th August

Inside the House things looked very different, the trades had installed all the insulation resulting in a very pink interior.

Insulation

A big part of our house build was attempting to make sure the house would maintain as stable a temperature as possible due to my Raynaud’s syndrome, which is an autoimmune condition that is affected by a temperature drop. This was the main reason we opted to fully insulate the whole house and install double glazed windows. The ducted heating and cooling could maintain the house however we both like to try and be as ecofriendly as possible and insulation and double glazed windows contribute greatly to maintaining the temperature of the house.

So besides the brickwork being finished this week, the expectation is the gyprock should start to be installed from Monday. so fingers crossed by the end of the week we have good progress.
