Egyptian walking onions Part 2

We have an update on the Egyptian walking onions, albeit slightly delayed due to contracting Covid and subsequent appointments related to our house build. Roughly 3-4 days after placing the order for the onions from Edible Jungle Nursery, our package arrived. Alongside the onions, we had also ordered a cutting of a Frangipani named “Col’s Cooktown Sunset.” The packaging was excellent, with each type of plant carefully placed in a labeled paper bag. These bags were then packed into a sturdy cardboard postage box. Upon inspection, we found not only the expected 5 onion bulbs but a generous extra, totaling 6 bulbs. This unexpected addition was a pleasant surprise, and we’re eager to see how both plants thrive in our garden. Additionally, there was the midsection cutting from a Frangipani, already cured and ready for planting.

After receiving the bulbs, I soaked them in a cup of water for about an hour to hydrate their roots. Then, I planted them in a mixture of compost and potting mix and placed them under my grow lights.

Now, 11 days after planting, I’ve observed the tops starting to grow. This suggests that root development beneath the soil is progressing well.

Egyptian walking onion’s growing progression

As depicted in the photo, all except one of the plants have sprouted their green tops since arriving. I’m thrilled to see this progress and am hopeful that the growth will continue at such a rapid pace. With any luck, in just a few seasons, I’ll have an abundance of Egyptian walking onions.
